How is New Zealand in August for traveling around three weeks, considering climate etc?

Cold! It is the middle of winter. There are differences in climate between the north and south island so layers is the way to go.

When you get there you can buy thermal layers made from NZ merino wool. They come in under and outer wear and they are really fashionable. You wouldn't know they were thermal! I wore these in cities, as well as treking in Patagonia, so I can vouch for them!

Depending on the season you will also get to see some good snow in the alpine areas.

It's pretty chilly in August!! Some great snow on the slopes so it's a good time for skiing or snowboarding. South Island will obviously be colder than the North Island but in August it's pretty cold all over NZ!

Wear layers!

But don't forget sunscreen cos you can still get burned.
